Hot cocoa is a winter favorite perfect for warming you up and wiping away the winter blues. Yet it can also be quite healthy when it is not loaded with refined sugars. Cornell University researchers found that cocoa has more antioxidants than red wine or green tea, meaning it can reduce the risk of heart disease. Chocolate also contains high amounts of flavonoids that can promote healthy arteries.
Yet you do not have to stop with classic hot cocoa. Many other ingredients can be added to the classic recipe to spice things up. Include a dash or two of cinnamon or nutmeg. Try adding peanut butter. You could also replace the honey with maple syrup or stir in a little cherry juice. If you like spicy foods or are feeling adventurous, trying adding some cayenne pepper or a shot of hot sauce to the mix.
The sky is the limit!
