Jesus said, “I will build My Church…†There is a single organization that teaches the entire truth of the Bible, and is called to live by “every word of God.†Do you know how to find it? Christ said it would:

  • Teach “all things†He commanded
  • Have called out members set apart by truth
  • Be a “little flockâ€

How to Speak in Public

Public speaking is a challenge we often face. Both at school and in the workplace, we are required to give speeches, reports and presentations in front of peers. Communication is a key to growth, and this includes public speaking!

Though the idea of delivering a message for an audience can make one nervous, this skill can be learned and mastered. Below are five basic tools for effective public speaking.

  • Desire to serve others: When you speak, do not seek to “make an impression.†Your goal should be to benefit others through the message you are giving. Focus on how your speech can help and edify listeners.
  • Prepare diligently: You will usually know days or weeks in advance when you will be speaking and what your topic is. Use this time to research the subject, organize what you want to say, and practice the speech out loud. (It can be helpful to do this in front of friends or family to receive feedback.) After receiving a speaking assignment, begin thinking about it right away! Mull over your topic, develop it through careful thought, and write an outline of the speech on paper. If you do not begin preparing until the evening before you are scheduled to give your speech, you are setting yourself up to fail!
  • Follow a basic structure: A typical speech should consist of an introduction, a clear “SPS†(specific purpose statement—a concise sentence that tells listeners the purpose of the speech), a body and a conclusion. The audience will be able to follow you attentively if your message is properly organized.
  • Develop a personal connection: If you are not interested in your topic, the audience will not be interested in your speech! The best speeches are genuine and from the heart. Throw yourself into your subject. Think about how it applies to you. Obviously, this is not easy to do with every topic, but even an assignment about a seemingly dull, uninteresting book or aspect of history requires your all. Be sincere, earnest and convicted.
  • Be confident: If you have diligently organized and prepared your speech with the goal of helping others, there is no reason to feel nervous or scared. You know your message, so deliver it with boldness! Forget yourself and convey the message to your listeners.

As you apply these principles and have the opportunity to speak more often, public speaking will seem exciting! You will actually look forward to it, and grow with each speech you deliver.
