Jesus said, “I will build My Church…†There is a single organization that teaches the entire truth of the Bible, and is called to live by “every word of God.†Do you know how to find it? Christ said it would:

  • Teach “all things†He commanded
  • Have called out members set apart by truth
  • Be a “little flockâ€

Get Fit!

Would you like to be in better shape? Preparing for Ambassador Youth Camp provides the perfect opportunity!

Do you have boundless energy—or do you feel sluggish and tired? Be honest. Are you ready for a whirlwind two weeks of intense physical activity at Ambassador Youth Camp?

If you have attended AYC in previous years, you can recall the amount of time spent doing physical activities. But for those who will be attending for the first time, realize that camp involves two weeks of soccer, hikes, volleyball, swimming, jogging, football, a scavenger hunt and more!

Before you go, ensure you prepare for it physically.

Why Be in Shape?

Most at least generally understand that exercise is good for you. But do you know all the benefits? Before looking at them, let’s briefly examine what God says in His Word.

In I Timothy 4:8, the apostle Paul recorded, “…bodily exercise profits little [meaning, for a little while].â€

King Solomon also said, “The glory of young men is their strength†(Prov. 20:29). Take these verses at face value. God tells us that exercising and strengthening our bodies is beneficial and profitable.

A few of the many benefits of being active include a stronger heart, sharper brain, stronger bones, less risk of contracting diseases, better circulation and a longer life. And scientists and researchers are constantly learning more. Space does not permit elaborating on these benefits, but even some brief research shows that exercise is key to living a happy, productive life.

Your AYC experience will be far better if you are in shape. But before deciding what to do specifically, you need to first understand what can prevent your success.

Overcoming Common Obstacles

Consider some excuses that prevent people from working out: family, work, tiredness, overall busyness, commitments you have made and schoolwork. The most common reason is, “I don’t have enough time.â€

Do you ever find yourself saying this? Is extra schoolwork taking from time you wish you could spend exercising? What about chores or a part-time job? Why is it, when we all have 24-hour days, that some have exercise routines, while others say they do not have time?

Although a number of factors are involved, exercise comes down to prioritizing it, using self-control and allotting time for it. Clear a slot in your schedule and create a specific exercise plan. If it is truly a priority to you, make time for it. Do not allow your mind to invent excuses for not being active. As the slogan goes, “Just do it!â€

A common misconception is that physical activity is only beneficial if done for a long period of time. Even a 15-minute walk has positive effects.

Another way to get into an exercise routine is to find something you enjoy doing, such as volleyball, skiing or hiking. This is a great way to get in better shape, while also training your mind to enjoy being active.

One health expert coined the phrase, “Disguise your exercise.†Getting fit does not have to be drudgery. Find a physical activity you enjoy and stick to it!

Some Practical Points

Now for some ideas. Walking is a great form of exercise, and an easy way to get started. You could begin with one-mile walks and gradually increase the distance. Also consider hiking, which is a good way to see more of the outdoors and experience God’s creation.

Another way is jogging. Start small by going around the block a few times. You also might want to purchase a pedometer, which records the number of steps you have taken and approximate distance you have traveled. You do not need a gym membership or treadmill for these activities as long as you have access to streets or sidewalks.

Incorporate strength training with free weights at home or at a gym, making sure to learn safe and proper techniques. Building muscle has the added benefit of strengthening your skeletal system and tendons.

Remember to be balanced. Some devote their lives to bodybuilding or exercising. Do not overdo it.

Learn proper methods of stretching and warming up so you do not injure yourself. Take it slow and learn the techniques of the activity before diving in.

Being in shape is more than just exercising. It also has to do with what you eat. Healthy foods can make a huge difference in how you feel. Do you eat ice cream every night, or drink soda? Be balanced in your eating habits. Do not overeat or regularly consume processed, fatty or high-sugar foods. Learn about what foods will give you energy. (See the article "Fun with Nutrition" archived on the AY website to learn more.) Create a daily plan—with goals—to eat healthier and allow yourself to take baby steps.

Key to Enjoying AYC

Use Ambassador Youth Camp as a stepping stone to get in better shape. If you are in good physical condition, you will not have as many aches and pains at camp, nor will you be as prone to injury. Your body will be accustomed to exercising and regular use, so you will already be “tuned up†for the physical activities at camp.

Sickness can also limit what you receive from the camp experience. Research ways to boost your immune system, which will prevent you from “catching†colds or flu bugs that others might have at camp.

Do you have an ankle problem or lower back issues? Strengthen these areas so that they do not limit your ability to participate.

This short article is intended to stir you to action to prepare for AYC. The real place to start is Mr. David C. Pack’s booklet God’s Principles of Healthful Living. It contains much helpful information about getting in shape and living a healthier life.

After reading this booklet, take it upon yourself to research as much as you can from other books, videos and websites on the subject. But be sure you do not count researching exercise as exercise! Do not be afraid of gaining hands-on experience by jumping right in and learning as you go. Researching too much before taking action can hold you back from achieving your goals.

This year, strive to get in better physical shape before Ambassador Youth Camp—you will truly benefit from it!
