The conflict is being called a failure for Israel, with the bulk of the blame placed squarely on Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s shoulders. The report’s release prompted immediate calls for the Prime Minister’s resignation.
Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah was pleased with the report, which he called “respectable” in that it calls the war a defeat for Israel.
Expressing a desire to learn from his mistakes, Mr. Olmert is planning to implement the report’s recommendations, but despite intense criticism, he plans to remain in his position. Government officials in his Kadima party have largely backed his position.
However, Israeli public opinion has begun to turn against the prime minister: Polls show that two-thirds of the population wants Mr. Olmert to step down.
More than 100,000 demonstrators gathered in front of Tel Aviv City Hall to protest Mr. Olmert’s decision to remain in office, chanting “Olmert, you’re fired.” A large banner also declared what was on the citizens’ minds: “Failures, Go Home!”
