A research scientist from The Ohio State University said, “The earthquake changed the gravity in that part of the world in two ways that we were able to detect.” Using satellite data, the scientists determined the earthquake dramatically lifted the seafloor and shifted rock underneath it, both producing gravity changes.
The earthquake beneath the Indian Ocean produced a tsunami that killed around 230,000 people and left more than one million homeless.
This marked the first time scientists used satellites to detect changes in the Earth’s surface caused by an earthquake.
