According to the director of the Catholic charity Caritas, a confederation of 162 Catholic relief organizations in 200 countries and territories, around 10 million people die from hunger every year.
The Austrian director of the organization said the hunger-related deaths were “greater than those from tuberculosis, malaria and AIDS combined.”
The widespread lack of food is due to drought, plagues and governments’ poor political, economic and ecological decisions.
The director also said that around 850 million people worldwide (almost one in seven) suffer from severe malnutrition.
