Mossad, Israel’s intelligence service, believes Iran is on the verge of producing enough enriched uranium to make nuclear weapons within two years. The Sunday Times reported Israel is actively training to disable Iran’s nuclear facilities using tactical nuclear weapons.

Because Israel fears conventional strikes may no longer be capable of disabling the increasingly defended Iranian nuclear facilities, a military source stated, “As soon as the green light is given, it will be one mission, one strike and the Iranian nuclear project will be demolished.”

Israel has identified three Iranian sites of primary concern: Natanz, where thousands of centrifuges are being installed for uranium enrichment, a plutonium-producing heavy water reactor located in Arak, and a conversion facility near Ishafan, where Iranian Vice-President Esfandiyar Rahim-Mashai recently confirmed that over 250 tons of uranium enriching gas has been stored in deep underground tunnels.

According to the plan, conventional laser-guided “bunker buster” bombs would open up “tunnels” into the targets—some heavily protected by a layer of concrete 70 feet thick—followed by tactical nuclear missiles roughly 1/15th the size of the Hiroshima blast.

It is unclear whether the plan’s leak was accidental or intentional. Was it meant to pressure Tehran into abandoning its nuclear aspirations? Or was it an act of desperation designed to preempt a second holocaust? Military analysts have indicated the disclosure of such plans may be intended to pressure Tehran to halt uranium enrichment, entice American support and action, or soften world opinion in advance of an Israeli attack.

Regardless, the impasse is clear: Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has repeatedly insisted “Israel must be wiped from the map”—and the Israeli government has declared it will “never” allow Iran to produce nuclear weapons.

As tensions heighten, which country will blink first?  Perhaps more disturbing, which will act first?
