There are many reasons why we do not celebrate Christmas. Here is a short answer: Jesus Christ was not born in the winter. Even if He did expect us to celebrate the day of His birth—and this cannot be found anywhere in the Bible—would it honor Him to celebrate it weeks or months late?
Also, Santa Claus, reindeer pulling a flying sleigh, evergreen trees and mistletoe have nothing to do with Jesus Christ. These popular, manmade traditions have their origins in pagan customs that existed long before His birth. For example, Santa Claus is actually an ancient pagan god, named Molech, to whom ancient peoples (including the Israelites at one point) sacrificed their children. God hated this and called it an abomination. The Christmas tree is called an empty custom in Jeremiah 10.
In addition, the season revolves around materialism, which is against the values that Jesus taught.
Editor’s Note: Teens in God’s Church are often asked questions about their beliefs, actions, etc. In this section, we will periodically produce answers to give you ideas to help you respond. While such questions are often about smaller issues or details, it is always good to apply the principle of I Peter 3:15: “Be ready always to give an answer to every man that asks you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear.”
