Contrary to mainstream Protestant teaching, the Holy Spirit is not the third member of a Trinity. Rather, it is the agent or power by which the Father and Christ both work (John 5:17).
A good analogy that would help you understand how the Holy Spirit works is trying to understand electricity and how it works. While you cannot see electricity, it is working. It flows into your house through wires, conductors and cables. This provides power for appliances that are plugged into this source, allowing them to operate.
Likewise, Christ was “tapped into” an incredible source of power—the Holy Spirit. And like other power sources, He felt it flow out of Him when used. Prior to baptism and the actual receiving of the Holy Spirit, it is only with you. One who is seeking the truth and God’s will in his life is first led by the Holy Spirit (John 16:13), enabling the person to understand God’s Word and to seek repentance and baptism. It is through the power of the Holy Spirit that God the Father calls individuals to Christ (John 6:44, 65). After baptism, the Holy Spirit is actually in you, continually guiding and helping you to obey God (Rom. 8:14).
