Have you noticed that if you have been sitting or lying down for some time and then suddenly jump to your feet you can get light-headed? This is due to a lack of blood in your head. On the other extreme, if you stand on your head for a long period of time, too much blood will go to your head and give you a headache.
Imagine the complications a giraffe must face. The animal needs a very powerful pump—a heart that weighs 26 pounds!—to force the blood to its head, which is far from the rest of its body.
What would happen if, all of a sudden, a giraffe bowed its head and took a drink of water? The blood would suddenly rush toward its head, causing a brain aneurysm, which would instantly kill it. Yet this does not happen because a giraffe’s arteries are designed to sense an increase in pressure and instantly close down as soon as it lowers its head.
Now, what would happen when the giraffe raises its head after drinking water? Due to the force of gravity, the blood would rush down its neck and cause it to instantly pass out.
This is not the case either because there is a sponge-like material right behind the brain that slowly gathers blood while the giraffe drinks. When the giraffe does raise its neck, the blood does not rush back down to the heart.
How awesome and inspiring are the creatures that God has made!
