Finding your first job can be difficult. Here are some helpful tips that several individuals in the workforce responded with when asked, “What is your advice to a young person looking for a job for the first time?”
“For the first time, please wear a shirt and tie, speak correct grammar and present a resume.”
“Make sure that [you] don’t have [your] T-shirts down around [your] kneecaps because that wouldn’t make a very good first impression.”
“Don’t take off any personal or sick time for the first full year because it shows that you’re dedicated to the job and not flighty and can stick with something.”
“Dress with respect. I’ve seen kids turn up for interviews in [a rock group] shirt. You’ve got to wear a suit and a tie, fella. Look the part.”
“Don’t be discouraged, just keep trying. There’s a lot of competition out there. And if you have to take a job that isn’t what you want, do that, just to have an income and to get experience in working until you can go to what you want to get into.”
