He is quoted throughout The Restored Church of God’s extensive library of literature. He is sometimes spoken of in sermons and among brethren fellowshipping on the Sabbath. The Church even publishes a biography recounting his amazing life and ministry. But who was this 20th-century servant of God?
- Who Was Herbert W. Armstrong?
It was the summer of 1978. I was 14 years old and serious thoughts weighed heavily on my mind. “What’s the purpose of my life?” “What happens when I die?” “Will the horrific events described in Revelation occur in my lifetime—and if so, how can I escape them?”

Common Questions
- “I have noticed that you do not celebrate Christmas or New Year’s Day. Are you Jewish?”
The Restored Church of God is not connected with the religion of Judaism, though some of its members may be ethnically Jewish (physical descendants of the Israelite tribe of Judah). Unlike Judaism, the Church of God bases its beliefs on the entire Bible—both Old and New Testaments—and believes that Jesus Christ is the Messiah. Some assume that we are Jewish because we do not keep traditional holidays and because we keep the seventh-day Sabbath. But despite some superficial similarities, we have many beliefs that differ with those who practice Judaism. Members of God’s Church are simply Christians—followers of all the teachings and practices of Christ.
- “Where were you for eight days?”
Every fall we observe a seven-day-long festival known as the Feast of Tabernacles, along with the Last Great Day, which is the day after the seventh day of the Feast. It is an incredibly joyous occasion in which people gather together all over the world for spiritual growth, food, fellowship and fun. This week-long festival pictures the 1,000-year rule of Jesus Christ and the saints on the earth—when peace, happiness and abundance will break out everywhere! We come together for eight days to look forward to that wonderful time, which is soon to arrive. God commanded ancient Israel to observe these days (Leviticus 23:39), and this command is still in effect for His Church today. The difference is that today we do not offer animal sacrifices, and we do not dwell in tents. Most churches do not observe the Feast because they are either unaware of it or think it is no longer necessary. But God’s true Church is aware of it and understands that it is commanded to be observed.
- “Why do you go to Church on Saturday?”
We go to Church services on Saturday because it is the true Sabbath day. God ordained the seventh-day (Saturday) a holy day after He re-created the earth (Genesis 2:3). He commands His people to observe this day in the Fourth Commandment—and, contrary to what most people say, the Ten Commandments are still binding on Christians. In contrast, God never ordained Sunday a holy day—and none of the Ten Commandments reference Sunday as being special in any way. In addition, Jesus declared that the Sabbath was made for man (Mark 2:27). This means that God created the Sabbath as a day to be enjoyed by all of mankind. Although most people think otherwise, the Sabbath is not a burden. It is actually a day to look forward to each week—a guaranteed day of rest and rejuvenation.
- “Why do you meet for Church services in your home?”
It is important to understand that the word “Church” is derived from the Greek word “ekklesia,” which means “called out ones.” The Church is comprised of those whom God has “called out” of this world and into obedience to His Word. Many think of a church as a physical building, often with a steeple, but God says that His Church is actually people. It is not necessary to meet in a typical “church-like” building for services since the Church is wherever God’s people are, instead of a particular structure. Also consider that wherever “two or three are gathered together in [Jesus’] name, there [He is] in the midst of them” (Matt. 18:20). Jesus Christ is present wherever His people meet on the Sabbath, even if it is in a Church member’s home.
- “Why Don’t You Celebrate Christmas?”
There are many reasons why we do not celebrate Christmas. Here is a short answer: Jesus Christ was not born in the winter. Even if He did expect us to celebrate the day of His birth—and this cannot be found anywhere in the Bible—would it honor Him to celebrate it weeks or months late? Also, Santa Claus, reindeer pulling a flying sleigh, evergreen trees and mistletoe have nothing to do with Jesus Christ. These popular, manmade traditions have their origins in pagan customs that existed long before His birth. For example, Santa Claus is actually an ancient pagan god, named Molech, to whom ancient peoples (including the Israelites at one point) sacrificed their children. God hated this and called it an abomination. The Christmas tree is called an empty custom in Jeremiah 10. In addition, the season revolves around materialism, which is against the values that Jesus taught.
- “Why Don’t You Celebrate Easter?”
There are a number of reasons that we do not celebrate Easter. First, while Jesus Christ did instruct His disciples to commemorate His death (Luke 22:19-20), He never told them to observe or celebrate His resurrection. Also, careful reading of the New Testament shows that Christ was resurrected on Saturday—not Sunday, the day on which Easter is kept. In addition, the customs surrounding Easter have pagan roots that extend to times well before the life of Christ. The word Easter itself comes from Ishtar, the name of a Babylonian fertility goddess. Also, eggs, rabbits, hot-cross buns and other symbols of the season are linked to fertility rituals. Scripture clearly states that those who seek to worship God should not be involved with paganism (Jer. 10:2).
- “Why don’t you celebrate Valentine’s Day?”
We do not celebrate Valentine’s Day for a number of reasons. Primarily, this day is rooted in pagan customs that do not honor God. For example, on this day in ancient Rome, small pieces of paper (called billets) having names of teenaged girls written on them were placed into containers. A teenaged boy would randomly choose a billet and become a “couple” with a girl. They would then engage in erotic games at parties and be sexual partners for the rest of the year. Over the course of many years, immoral practices such as this were adapted and blended into traditional Christianity. God forbids His people to blend such pagan customs with what He commands (Ex. 23:24; Deut. 12:30). Also, God nowhere mentions Valentine’s Day in His Word. However, He does command us to observe His seven annual Holy Days.
- “Why don’t you eat pork?”
God’s dietary laws in Leviticus 11 explain that pork is not to be eaten. Pork is not healthy food. The reason is that pigs are scavengers. They carry viruses, diseases and parasites. They also carry trichina worms that can be passed to humans by pork, which can lead to a disease called Trichinosis. Trichinosis causes symptoms that are similar to a severe flu, which last anywhere from 10 days to several months. This disease is sometimes fatal. Pork is also high in cholesterol, which contributes to cardiovascular disease. Healthy protein sources include dairy, legumes, chicken and lean beef. Science has proven that the Bible’s dietary laws are for our protection! (Read our article “Are All Animals Good Food?” for more information.)
- “Why don’t you or your parents support or vote for a presidential candidate?”
The Bible states that a Christian’s “conversation [citizenship] is in heaven” (Phil. 3:20). We refrain from voting and engaging in politics because we understand that man’s systems of government will ultimately be replaced by a single, world-ruling supergovernment—the kingdom of God, which will soon reign over the entire earth. Any form of voting is based on a belief that mankind is capable of governing itself, which has never been the case. We also recognize that in God’s government, leaders are not voted into office. God’s government is from the top down, not the bottom up.
- “Why is your Church called ‘The Restored Church of God’?”
In twelve places in the Bible, the Church founded by Jesus Christ is referred to as “the Church of God.” The word “restored” refers to doctrine. The teachings Jesus taught His disciples, which the Church in the first-century believed, were restored in the 20th century. The Restored Church of God believes and actively teaches all of those doctrines. But we do not expect anyone to blindly accept that statement without proof—the literature and audio programs we produce provide the evidence!
- “Will your parents let you go to the game this Friday night…just this once?”
Teens in God’s Church are not just following rules set by parents, or a minister. We believe that by keeping the laws of the Bible, such as the Fourth Commandment to keep the Sabbath, we are living a way of life that brings happiness and success. These laws are even more real than the laws of a state or country, and they apply to everyone, all the time. We keep them in order to please God, not just because another person says we must.
- “You go to church every week. That means you have been ‘saved’ and received Christ as your personal Savior, right?”
The Church I attend does emphasize the teachings of Jesus Christ and that one must follow the example He set while on Earth. However, while salvation is a gift, one must qualify by living a life of obedience to God’s Way. Jesus said that the person who “endures to the end, the same shall be saved” (Matt. 24:13). Only after death will we receive salvation. With this verse in mind, merely receiving Christ as a personal Savior does not mean one is “saved.” Instead, a life of obedience and endurance is required to receive salvation.
- Can we wear things that say “angel” on them?
It has become a popular trend to wear clothing and other fashion accessories displaying images commonly associated with humanly-devised ideas of what angels look like (and to also display paraphernalia – such as bumper stickers, banners, etc., making use of the names of God and Christ). The word “angel,” of and by itself, can carry various connotations, depending on the context in which it is used. To wear an article of clothing that simply makes use of the word (without any direct or implied reference to a literal angelic being) is not wrong. However, this may be difficult to do and, therefore, it would be best to avoid such clothing altogether. An obvious error would come in wearing something that displays a depiction (partial or full) of such a being, which would be a violation of the Second Commandment (Ex. 20:4). Also notice Revelation 19:10 and 22:9, which show that angels are not to be worshipped.
- Do you observe Thanksgiving?
Members of the Church of God observe Thanksgiving Day in the United States and Canada since this day is intended to honor God and show gratitude for the tremendous blessings He has given these nations. Its intent and origin are much different from other traditional holidays, such as Christmas and Halloween, which have ancient roots in pagan fertility rituals. Also, Jesus Himself set an example of observing certain national celebrations, such as the “Feast of Dedication” (John 10:22).
- Exactly what is the Holy Spirit and how does it work with you before baptism?
Contrary to mainstream Protestant teaching, the Holy Spirit is not the third member of a Trinity. Rather, it is the agent or power by which the Father and Christ both work (John 5:17).
- How do we behave around those who are living in blatant sin (i.e. fornicating, doing drugs)?
It is important to realize that any transgression of God’s Law is sin (I John 3:4), and that all human beings sin (Rom. 3:23; 5:12). With that in mind, one who is learning God’s way of life realizes that anyone with whom he comes in contact, including classmates, practice some form of sin in his/her life. Of course, some sins are more apparent than others—even obvious. Does this make those sins worse—more sinful? As James 2:11 shows, sin is sin: “Now if you commit no adultery, yet if you kill, you are become a transgressor of the law.”
- I have recently been informed that one of my biology lessons in the next school term will “touch on the basics of the subject of evolution.” Should I cautiously go through or refuse to participate in this lesson?
The best course of action is to proceed with the study of biology; however, be aware of the error pertaining to evolution. All sciences taught in schools and colleges touch upon the theory of evolution to one degree or another. However, those who understand the truth about evolution should not deprive themselves of science courses. Much joy can result from studying nature, especially when one understands that an all-wise God created it. Also, resist any urge you might have to confront or argue with your instructors about the error of their thinking concerning evolution. More than likely, your instructors are firmly entrenched in this belief and will not have an open mind to receive the truth.
- Is it wrong for men to wear necklaces?
The practice of wearing necklaces was once generally confined to women. But during the past couple of decades, increasing numbers of men have begun to take part in this practice. What does God have to say about this? Let’s consider a few points.
- Is it wrong to download copyrighted music or videos from the Internet, or to make copies of music CDs or DVDs?
Though many hundreds of thousands, if not millions, do it—any reproduction of copyrighted material (printed or digital material, music, video, software, games, etc.) is prohibited. And it is also potentially punishable under United States Copyright Law.
- Is it wrong to participate in games of chance?
One needs to examine personal motives. Why would a person want to play cards, dice, and games of chance in general? Mostly, people are craving to gain something they have not earned. It can be coveting, and God commands us not to covet (Ex. 20:17; Deut. 5:21). We are also warned about covetousness in Ephesians 5:3-5 and in I Corinthians 6:10. We would not want others to gain wealth at our expense. Likewise for us, as we should love our neighbor as ourselves (Matt. 19:19). Therefore, gambling is sin, and sin is the transgression of the Law (I John 3:4).
- Is making sculptures of humans okay?
I study art at school, and it is one of my favorite subjects, but recently I was planning on making some sculptures of humans. I was wondering whether it is wrong to make a sculpture of a human, even if it isn’t a specific human. Would it be going against God’s commandment not to make carved images?
- Should I cancel any future “medical attention” that has been planned for me?
I have recently been reading The Truth About HEALING. After reading it, I have wondered, should I cancel any future “medical attention” that has been planned for me? I ask this because I am supposed to have dental work done in the near future and was wondering whether I should rather cancel it and pray that God would heal the problem.
- Should I take drama class?
This year I am in tenth grade and we are supposed to start making our subject choices for our senior years. I was going to choose drama as one of my electives but recently our class learned that drama originated from religious rituals. So now I am not sure whether it would be a suitable choice.
- What do you say when people tell you “Merry Christmas”?
Many who understand the true origin and meaning behind certain holidays (and do not participate in them) often find such situations awkward and uncomfortable. This need not be the case, as all that is simply required is to exercise tact and common courtesy, so as not to unnecessarily offend those who are simply caught up in the “holiday spirit.” There are a number of ways to best respond to any sincere “well-wishing” (including “Happy New Year,” “Happy Valentine’s Day,” “Happy Easter,” etc.). These could include: A simple “Thank you,” “Have a safe holiday,” etc.
- What does the Bible say about wearing tattoos? – Is this wrong?
Body-piercing and tattooing are steadily increasing in popularity among teens and adults alike. Vast numbers now have them. These practices are viewed as modes of “self-expression” and “individuality,” with many pushing the envelope in regard to standards of decency and propriety. Those who have become role models of every kind throughout society today seem to be almost covered in every kind of bizarre, perverse, sexually suggestive, and even outright satanic tattoo that a “creative” mind (at a tattoo parlor) cut off from God could dream up.
- Would God consider it a sin to visit my uncle, who is a Mason?
I am supposed to be visiting my aunt and uncle for a few days. However, I have recently discovered that my uncle is indirectly involved with a semi-religious group known as the Masons. Due to my uncle’s association with this group, by visiting and staying with him, would God consider me “unequally yoked together with unbelievers” (II Cor. 6:14)? Would He consider it a sin for me to visit them?
- Would it be acceptable to vote in this case or even apply for a position?
Recently at school, we have had elections for next year’s School Captains. The elections involved several students applying for a position and the whole grade voting. Would it be acceptable to vote in this case or even apply for a position?
